This position is a production welding position for weldments placed on large stators cores used in the manufacturing of locomotive alternators and generators.


The position requires internal qualifications to the AWS (American Welding Society) D15.1 standard. The qualification process will be provided by Orchid, but applicable welding skills are needed to obtain the certification.


The welder / assembler will be joining structural steel to lamination stacks and welding laminations based on written procedures applicable to part numbers of the alternators and generators. The welder / assembler will be responsible maintaining production schedules, must work with the production teams to maintain workflows, and be able to pick and inventory raw materials. This position will require assembly and welding of the stator cores. The position will require the candidate to work in other areas of the plant-based production loads and customer demand.


Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to contributing to the company’s continuous improvement process and complying with all safety, environmental, quality, and core policies; this individual must possess the following:


  • Understand and use fabrication shop drawings, exception drawings and weld codes.
  • Ability to set up and maintain your assigned FCAW station and equipment.
  • Ability to set up and maintain your assigned SMAW welding station and equipment.
  • Good mechanical and trouble shooting skills.
  • Understand and use reference detail manuals and fabrication reference manuals.
  • Overhead crane operation.
  • Perform daily maintenance checks on equipment.
  • Dimensional inspect product using standard measuring equipment.
  • Meets all quality assurance standards.
  • Complete safety training program for welding position.
  • Responsible for housekeeping in work area.
  • Ability to read and understand work instructions, assignments, drawings, and reference material.
  • Ability to interpret and act upon a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Follow all safety and operating instructions.
  • All other duties as may be assigned.
